Near-Surface Geophysical Surveys at the Tulsa County District 12 Levee “A” Test Site

Abstract:

Faculty and student members of the Geoscience Department at The University of Tulsa have been conducting geophysical studies along the Tulsa County Levee system.  Study area is a portion of the District 12 Levee “A”, located in Sand Springs, OK.  Residential homes and industrial facilities in this vicinity experienced significant flooding during the May/June 2019 Arkansas River flooding event.  Our objective is to ascertain which geophysical methods can be used to determine lateral variations in levee and substrate properties, hopefully leading to imaging methods for future mitigation.  Elements of repeating surveys over time will serve to add a temporal component to our research.

Geophysical methods include refraction seismic, resistivity, Electromagnetic (E&M), spontaneous potential, and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR).  These are “work in progress” with data being compiled from our GPHY 4023 Field Methods course and several data acquisition sessions led by graduate students. Two of our MSc. Geoscience students, Ella Norvell and David Clayman are basing their research on these studies. We will show data examples from each method, discuss observations, and invite comment from the GST  members.

David Clayman

Graduate Student,  MSc. Geoscience, Geosciences Department, University of Tulsa

Ella Norvell

Graduate Student,  MSc. Geoscience, Geosciences Department, University of Tulsa

David and Ella are Graduate students at TU, conducting research in near-surface geophysical methods with a focus on community engagement.  Both are working students, simultaneously pursuing their graduate studies while working outside of TU.

Due to his employment commitments, David will not be able to join us on 11-11-2020 but has graciously provided his research for sharing with the geophysical community.

Ellie L. Norvell received her B.Sc. in Geophysics from the University of Tulsa, Oklahoma (2019). She is currently a first-generation graduate student working on her masters in geoscience at the University of Tulsa while being a teaching assistant to the geoscience department. Ella's interest is in seismology and how we, as a community, can use geophysical methods to better our communities.

Steven L. Roche

Associate Professor of Geophysics, Geosciences Department, University of Tulsa

Steve Roche received his B.Sc. in Geophysics from the University of California, Riverside (1978) and PhD Geophysics from the Colorado School of Mines (1997).  Research interests include multicomponent seismology and applications to porous subsurface rock systems.  Steve’s career in seismic imaging and hydrocarbon exploration spanned 40 years.  In 2017, he joined the Geoscience faculty at The University of Tulsa, teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in petroleum and near-surface geophysics.
